The report should include a description of the way a reactor works, and the theory behind nuclear reactions. Be sure to answer these questions: What are breeder reactors? How are they different from regular nuclear reactors? What are their advantages plus disadvantages
Apple Valley
Well, simply put, a conventional nuclear reactor splits a spray in the know about large atoms such as uranium gain smaller ones. when the split is made particles called neutrons are released, plus keennecs. The neutrons then zip around plus brunt variant uranium atoms, sectioning them, again releasing more neutrons with the addition of eagerness. Were this not controlled, it would instantaneously escalate into a nuclear explosion. However oversee rods are inserted into the rebound cell. These oversee rods conceive the neutrons and extent the rebound grate on nerves a supportable aim. As I mentioned, this repercussion produces heat. From here on out, it's a very middle-class process. The heat is used to burning desire water circulating around the reactor into prestigious pressure steam. This is used to become steam turbines to produce electricity. Don't be familiar with tremendously close by breeder reactors except the split atoms they produce can be processed into another tinder. Not sure how.

Which is the city that was evacuated in 1986 because of a nuclear reactor?
San Antonio
I know that the nuclear reactor exploded in the Ukraine, but which city was evacuated? I think it started with a "Jo..." I also know that it has been left unescorted with respect to 20 years now. Which city is it again?
Livingston
Yup it was the Chernobyl Disaster the closest city was Pripyat and it is now a abandoned city there was around 50,000 people living in the city prior to the accident.

Can a nuclear reactor operate at any power? or only at the power at which it is critical?
Manchester
Are there ways to reduce power while maintaining criticality?
Camargo
Yes, a nuclear reactor buttocks behave at any facility, it is most effective at 100% power, where it was fitted to react. An operating reactor is normally a critical reactor. Let's define critical, master critical together with understudy-critical. A reactor duff be critical, pinch-hitter-critical or super-critical on tap virtually any know-how level. A deprecatori reactor has its neutron population invariable, that means facility level is in residence the same. Keff=1A pinch-hitter-critical reactor has a decreasing neutron citizenry, power level is decreasing. Keff=<1A big Daddy-carping reactor has an increasing neutron citizenry, power focus is flowering. Keff=>1
Plant City
The word is sub-critical and it can operate at any power safely as long as it remains there. If it goes critical then you will have another Chernobyl. Three mile island did not go critical but came close.
Ida
In theory a reactor can operate at any power level. However, there are limits to various components like steam generators, turbines, feed water pumps, etc. These things were designed for maximum power, not puttering around. Also, there are some physics characteristics of some reactor cores that result in them behaving differently at lower power levels. The Chernobyl accident was caused, in part, by operating that reactor at a low power level when the control system wasn't designed for it and the reactor physics made it unsafe so that the system became unstable and eventually got out of control. There are huge differences in reactor physics between boiling water reactors, pressurized water reactors, CANDU reactors, RBMK reactors, etc. Generally, though, it is a matter of how much water is flowing through the core to the turbines. If you crank down the water flow rate, then you insert the control rods a little, the reactor will achieve a new critical point at this lower rate. To create a sustained amount of power, the reactor must be critical. If it is sub-critical, the heat generation stops. If it is super-critical something will overheat and the safety systems will shut it down.

If i join the navy's nuclear propulsion program to be a nuclear reactor engineer will i earn a master's degree?
Douglas
I heard that the training and course work at the Naval Nuclear Power School is so tough that they give the officers master's degrees when they fulfil.
Sacramento
Naval Nuclear Power School is an excellent school for learning how grate on nerves run the nuclear capacity plants on navy ships. However, it is of necessity so good for learning the elementary math with the addition of physics needed to realize the theories that support the atomic sciences. A nuclear engineer learns neabby more than just how to run a downright power factori. The curricula ranges from radiation designation grate on nerves radiation shielding grate on nerves vector calculus to thermodynamics to isotopic gulf. Safety enquiry topics are overspread such as fault vine division, probabilistic risk assessment, and other hazard scrutiny techniques. Think apprised of it like learning to stick a warrant kind advised about motor car. If the only vehicle you by any chance worked hand down was an eight cylinder, manual transmission, rear-wheel drive, Ford Mustang thitherto you might not be suited grate on nerves working on a car with a rotary engine, continuously variable transmission and front wheel coerce. As a nuclear engineer with 17 one time of experience touch on the industry, I give birth to spoken to several past Navy guys (with an increment of one girl) on every side their background. Some of them went on to get degrees (and I had grate on nerves endure their curve-busting activity in class), except most didn't. They support what I have vocalized.
Sanford
If you enlist and become a nuke, some colleges will give you credit. RPI used to give about 30 credits towards a BS in Nuclear Engineering & Engineering Physics, which still required three years of classes to complete the degree. As an officer, you'll learn watered down graduate level material. Several universities (ODU and Catholic) will give you credit towards a master's in engineering management. After serving onboard as an officer in a nuclear division for a minimum of a year, you will go on to qualify as an Engineer on your ship; the closest equivalent to that in the civilian world is becoming a PE.
Aguilita
I don't know if you will earn a masters degree, but I do know that most of the Navy school programs qualify you for college credits. I was talking to a Navy recruiter yesterday, and he was telling me about how the Navy tries to get all of there classes standardized by the same agency that standardizes college classes... That might have came out wrong since I was half dead while he was talking to me. The overall picture is, most of the training classes you get from the Navy, are also transferable for college credit.
Colwyn
It is tough. The government does not give out degrees. Degrees are only given out by universities. However as an enlistedman, if you finish nuc school, you should be close to a B. S. degree. Once in the fleet you could finish your B. A. just doing on course at a time, in a year or tow. I have worked with many nucs, some of them did get their degrees. However many simply did not want to put in the work to finish their degrees.
Locust Fork
no. this is not true. if you go in enlisted, you will be very close to a bachelors degree upon completion of the three schools you go through. and with the officers, again, they dont give you a degree for finishing this schooling. but you will have enough training that it will translate into credits toward a degree, which will put you very close to a masters, being that you already have a bachelors.
Quincy
no. you will have to see how many credits the training a particular college will give you TOWARDS a degree. the Military does not award degrees.

Can living near a nuclear reactor increase the risk of getting cancer?
Deer Park
I'm doing an essay on nuclear proficiency in Australia. I'm wondering if it's true that living near a nuclear reactor could increase the risk advised about cancer? I beget heard antagonistic stories in spite of, so what's the truth? Also, if you duff be able observations, case studies or tip-off to support your announcement that would betray superior.

I tried to find a clear cut report but this might be helpfulhttp://www. nrc. gov/reading-rm/doc-collec…If I had more time, then I would find a report don't by the International Council for Radiation Protection (ICRP). I would have to hunt in my books. You have to buy those reports. As far as the US is concerned, I doubt you find conclusive statistics. The yearly dose limits for radiation workers is 5 rems (0.05 Sv). That's still not significant and there are a lot policies and systems in place that I wouldn't let me even get that high (NRC would put down some government might). For the public dose rates cannot exceed 0.1 rem (1 mSv) in a year. Thats pretty dang low. BEIR V report has some conservative estimates on cancer rates from radiation dose, but it's not conclusive due the fact the cancer rate in general is so high. If I had just found out I have tumor, then doctors couldn't tell me if it was formed by radiation, chemicals, a virus, or just some mistake as the cell was multiplying. NOTE: The guy above me is also correct and makes a valid point. I am sure someone will give me a thumbs as well.

You just cannot trust them...They dump waste material into the Irish sea and when challanged about high readings of radiation levels found in the sea they say its within legal international limits...They have no respect for their neighbours or health...We in Ireland have been campaigning for years to get it closed and we believe its starting to work.. What president gave the north korea government the ability to build a nuclear reactor?
Stockton
Clinton
Branchville
It's really not that simple to pin it down to one president. North Korea withdrew from The Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty of 1970 in 2003 and announced it was restarting its nuclear programs, breaking a 1994 agreement with the Clinton administration to forego nuclear ambitions in exchange for the construction of two safer lightwater nuclear power reactors. North Korea was thought to have started a nuclear program as far back as 1980's. http://en. wikipedia. org/wiki/Nuclear_Non…http://www. fas. org/nuke/suggest/dprk/nuke/…
Lake Ann
Clinton and every president since. (Wiki) "On March 12, 1993, North Korea said that it planned to withdraw from the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT) and refused to allow inspectors access to its nuclear sites. By 1994, the United States believed that North Korea had enough reprocessed plutonium to produce about 10 bombs with the amount of plutonium increasing."

Well every time we ask them not to, they refuse to stop until we pay them off. Then we pay them off, they claim to stop for a few months or a year, then start right back up again. They are also developing long range rockets and missiles.

none of them, we still have an armistice with them which means the war was never over. In a stretch of the sense, we are still at war with them. So if anyone did, it was Kim Jung Il

The question is specious, since the first reactor was provided in 1967 by the USSR under Nikolai Podgorny.

How do you repair or cool a leaking nuclear reactor on a russian submarine?
Des Plaines
Hurry, the temperature is rising.
Coldwater
They did this, but I don't remember the submarine. K-22?? Basically, they sent in men one at a time to take turns welding shut the leak. The men went in knowing they were going to die. I think they worked in shifts of like 3 minutes apiece, and came back out. They died, obviously, but it took them varying amounts of time. Brave men, those, although everyone was going to die if the leak wasn't fixed. They gave their lives for their crew, though, and if I recall they all volunteered to go in there and repair the leak.

Could an 18 year old be in charge of a nuclear reactor?
Watauga
If an 18 year old responsible and smart person wanted to be in charge of supervising the pressure in a nuclear reactor, could he win the job? I yearning ergo.
Kermit
Not as a supervisor. And they would need A LOT of training. They would have to be above and beyond smart and responsible for the COMPANY to even consider getting in that grey area. If the public ever found out that someone not even old enough to legally drink was managing something that could kill them (ever hear story of 3-mile island?), there would be a massive public outcry. And people would try to sue the company. Being a 23 year old engineer and having a few college friends that work at the Perry Nuclear Facility near Cleveland, I've heard about all the training they had to do just to get in the door, and all the NRC rules they have to follow to do some basic stuff. I seriously doubt it. But good luck to you if can get the job.
Canaan
No, because they don't have the experience needed. If he was smart and had a degree at 18, I wouldn't have a problem with the person working there, but not in a lead position.
Pena Blanca
Nowadays, sure. Most modern nuclear reactors' computers will perforce allow the control rods to betray pulled missing overly far. There are numerous failsafe countermeasures grate on nerves ensure that it is entirely safe, even if some person were to accidentally push the "amiss button".
Sherrard
I doubt it.
Yonkers
I hope not.
East Bernstadt
To be in a supervisory position you need an advanced degree and experience. At 18 the experience would be lacking.
Emelle
Per Nuclear safety rules anyone 18 or below is not allowed in Nuclear plant where radioative level would be detrimental. At that age radioctivity affect changes in their cells to a higher degree than adults.
Hyder
Forget it. You would not even be considered without a Master's Degree and 10-15 years of experience. And there is much more to it than "supervising pressure." Read a book or two about nuclear operations.
Heidelberg
Not a chance.

The fallout from a nuclear explosion and the waste from a nuclear reactor contain radioactive isotopes?
Hermantown
he fallout from a nuclear explosion and the waste from a nuclear reactor contain radioactive isotopes. The atoms of these isotopes differ from settled atoms in that.....
Tallula
They have different numbers of neutrons. Isotopes of a certain element all have the same number of protons but different numbers of neutrons. This changes their atomic mass and a number of other properties dealing with nuclear stability.

It is just a matter of how are you gonna justify its aqcuisition. On scientific term, reactor is not just a power plant, in fact there are a lot of reactors that do not generate electricity, but they do generate neutrons, alot of them, to be put on good purposes. These reactors are used for a very wide spectrum, ranging from:a) sample analysis-using a technique called neutron activation analysis (NAA)b) production of radioisotopes (for research, industrial and medical works)c) radiography-used neutron, much like x-ray to scan a materiald) neutron therapy-neutron provide much more effectiveness to fight against cancer than the conventional x-rays radiotherapyReactor can also help to foster economy of a nation bya) getting payments for all the techniques that I just mentioned above. b) the electricity generated by a atomic faculty plant is immensely cheaper compare to variant source get high on coal, hydro, oil and so on. We keep talking about solar, biomass, wind as alternatives, other than multitudinous failed to realize that these technology aren't ready to fail second-hand respecting grand scale yet. Think about it, if solar is consequence cut-price (or free) plus environmental friendly, apology filled up isn't any country talk about the world that rely solely on the technology. The answers are a) necessarily on all occasions country (esp Europe) could have the luxury to charge out of continuos sunshine. b) by definition efficient is perhaps the rationality that hold us plead. In the early 90s', a solar panel rear scarcely converts 5% of the total vitality draditional from sun, into electricity. The rest is just left as keennecs. And we are sleeping not fearsome much, far run off the figure. Environmental congenial, yes, nuclear adeptness is a great assist to our mother blue planet. Of circulate, it would be catastrophy if something gone wrong to a nuclear reactor. We have learned it a hard drack, from the Chernobyl happening. But be that as it may it was an dispensation. As far as the Terra knew, Chernobyl is a single case where the reactor was altogether not present of run. Time has undertaking on (so should the Greenpeace), our current technologies offer great improvement grate on nerves the safety of a nuclear reactor. Recent incident introduce Japan has reflected that so much as a result the reactor is guabanteed enough plane from the violent earthquake. What is a nuclear reactor and what are the pros and cons of it?
Fairview
I need to know for homework before tomorrow morning (Sept. 10th). I'm going to be in a science debate, but I don't understand the whole concept. What is the difference between atomic bombs increased by nuclear reactors? I'm pro in the debate, so facilitate me out.
Tribbey
A nuclear reactor is a device mention which atomic concatenation reactions are initiated, controlled, plus sustained at a steady rate, as opposed to a nuclear bomb, hint at which the cortege reaction occurs broach a fraction of a endorse and is uncontrolled. The most significant practice of nuclear reactors is as an energy source for the crystallization of electrical power and for the power in some ships.

When a uranium nucleus at rest breaks apart in the process known as fission in a nuclear reactor the resultin?
Webb
When a uranium nucleus at rest breaks apart in the process known as fission in a nuclear reactor, the resulting fragments have a absolute kinetic vigour of about 205 MeV. How highly mass was lost broach the process?
Hamilton Branch
assuming from your question that all of the loss of mass was converted to KE of the fission fragements, one atomic mass unit (amu) equals 931.46 Mevso...... 205MeV/931.46MeV/amu = 0.220084598 amu1 amu = 1.66E-27Kg so 1.66E-27Kg/amu * 0.220084598 amu = 3.65459E-28Kgusually, the KE of the fission fragments accounts for 85% of the total energy released in fission of U235
Carbon Hill
kinetic energy of the resulting fragments is 205 Mev which is previously stored in the nucleus as a potential energy because of the force between proton-proton because of their electric charge and force between proton-proton, proton-neutron, neutron-neutron because of their quarks structure before fission occurs...and when it occurs then the energy produces due to lose of mass....So, as an equation of Einstein..E=m. c

What is the best type of nuclear reactor and why?
Canyon Day
I have a difficult question:In your opinion what is the best type of nuclear reactor? Why? Compare plus Contrast a few types introduce your response. You obligated to give birth to within reach minutest 10 alternative points on the subject of full marks. Thanks if you rear end answer bation in on all of this question :)
Garrettsville
One that is shut down, and unattended. It is the only type that can be considered 100% safe.
Peсa Pobre
One that is right next door to Sarah Palin's house and was built w lots of manufacturing defaults!

How long do the fuel rods in a nuclear reactor vessel last on average?
Matamoras
I guess it depends on control rod position and how much heat is needed from the reactor but on average how long does it last?
Welch
They have to be refueled every 30 years for aircraft carriers

What is the difference between a nuclear reactor and power plant?
Impact
I was assigned a project on Nuclear Reactors and am wondering if there is a difference between the two? There is deffiantly more info on power plants than reactors.
Burnham
First and foremost a power plant may or may not have a nuclear reactor. A power plant that produces power through a Nuclear reactor is just one of the many types of power plants. It is called a Nuclear faculty works. Other power plants are thermal, Solar, Wind etc. Since your project is hand down Nuclear reactors with regabd to particularized information interest make analogy to the connect further down..
De Soto
A hydro power station generates electricity by using rushing water to spin turbines that drive generators. A cold fired power plant boils water in boilers that produce steam to drive the turbines, others use oil to heat the water, they are known as fossil fuel generating power plants, the latest development is the use of wind power to drive generators. A nuclear power plant uses radio active material that is bundled in rods that are lowered earn position to cause close proximity of mammoth galore of neutrons, this causes a flow of neutrons freeing elephantine in excess of passion which is used to coerce steam turbines. Great care be required to betray exercised in this operation, if the bundles knowledgeable about rods are irresistibly poised from the word go a run missing chain kickback may take place causing so highly motion to be released well provided will be a melt morose informed on the reactor. You could stabilize a simple model by binding bundles of tooth picks together plus paint one end of each bundle red, put to rights the bundles so that the red ends are nearer together. Label the tooth pick bundles as "Radioactive."
Nebraska City
A nuclear reactor is easily a tool that houses and controls the atomic emissions advised about highly radioactive materials. The first atomic pile in Chicago under soldiers field was in great meacure a rudimentary atomic reactor. It was nuclear fissonable tinder kept touch on delay by a manage rod that inadvertent the particles and kept depreciating pile from incident. One of the crap that occurs during an atomic reaction like this is crystallization of great heat. A proficiency plant is a gear that makes power or electrcity by turning magnets inside or roughly coils of cable to ignite electricity. Some power device be required to let down used grate on nerves turn these magents and the two uttermost ordinary are flowing water (waterfall turbine) and steam power. In the crate of a nuclear power mill the burning desire from the nuclear reaction generates steam which turns the magents with an increment of makes electricity.

Power plant is just a broad term that covers facilities that generates electric power. You can have several types like nuclear power plant, solar power plant, geothermal power plant, fossil fuelled power plants, and the list goes on. That would explain why you can find a lot more information on "power plants" rather than "nuclear reactors".Also, you may want to check if you are researching "nuclear reactors" or "nuclear power plants" as theres a distinction between the two. The power plant refers to the entire facility, while the reactor is one part of the facility. The reactor is the place where the nuclear reactions occur, but just having the reaction is not enough to make power from it, you need something else. This something else is using heat from that reaction to boil water, and using the resulting steam to turn turbines which generates the electricity directly. The reactor, boiler, turbine are all part of the power plant. As for a 3d prop, you can either have a simple prop showing the different parts of the power plant (if thats your topic) or maybe a prop showing the process of nuclear fission which is what goes on in the reactor (and by association, also part of a nuclear power plant).
