What are some of the ways a reactor works and the theory behind nuclear reactions?

Plainfield

The report should include a description of the way a reactor works, and the theory behind nuclear reactions. Be sure to answer these questions: What are breeder reactors? How are they different from regular nuclear reactors? What are their advantages plus disadvantages

Apple Valley

Well, simply put, a conventional nuclear reactor splits a spray in the know about large atoms such as uranium gain smaller ones. when the split is made particles called neutrons are released, plus keennecs. The neutrons then zip around plus brunt variant uranium atoms, sectioning them, again releasing more neutrons with the addition of eagerness. Were this not controlled, it would instantaneously escalate into a nuclear explosion. However oversee rods are inserted into the rebound cell. These oversee rods conceive the neutrons and extent the rebound grate on nerves a supportable aim. As I mentioned, this repercussion produces heat. From here on out, it's a very middle-class process. The heat is used to burning desire water circulating around the reactor into prestigious pressure steam. This is used to become steam turbines to produce electricity. Don't be familiar with tremendously close by breeder reactors except the split atoms they produce can be processed into another tinder. Not sure how.

How does a nuclear reactor work?

Payette

I'm doing a project on 'How would you live on the moon?'What is a nuclear reactor? (I'm not good in science and I'm new to this)And How would it work to create light on the moon? I am so confused! Thanks!

Carlisle

Salaam Sister, As the answer before me said that's pretty much what it is, its a giant boiler. Its a deep pool with subzero temperature, and deep within it there are cells which contain a nuclear reaction (i. e. Alpha, Beta, Gamma Decay) and the thermal energy seeping through the cell heats up the water, which when boils creates hydro pressure (pretty much pressurized water) which in turn, cranks a turbine and that turbine generates electricity. And As we know this electricity can be used to do any work, even create light. P. S. Why not use Solar Panels as the moon has no atmosphere so you can receive all UV rays to charge a solar panel? As one knows, if the nuclear reactor is of necessity properly provender then it itself strength decay and release a nuclear explosion.

Luther

A nuclear reactor produces energy in the form of heat. It does this by the active atoms nucleus (i. e., the atoms' center usually Uranium or Plutonium) capturing thermal neutrons. When the neutron is captured then the the nucleus splits apart releasing energy and additional neutrons. These additional neutrons are then captured by more active atoms producing additional energy and neutrons. This is known as a chain reaction. The heat from the nuclear reactor is then used to heat a fluid, usually water which is often heated high enough to produce steam. The steam is then used to power conventional turbines and generators to produce electricity/

Donnelsville

Despite all the cosmic energy that the word "nuclear" invokes, power plants on Earth, that depend on atomic energy don't operate that differently from a typical coal-burning power plant. Both heat water into pressurized steam, which drives a turbine generator. The key difference between the two plants is the method of heating the water. While coal plants burn fossil fuels, nuclear plants depend on the heat that occurs during nuclear fission, when one atom splits into two. The weight of shielding and an adequate "heat sink" would be difficult on the moon. There are several components common to most types of reactors:Fuel. Usually ceramic pellets of uranium oxide (UO2) arranged in Zirconium steel alloy tubes to form fuel rods. The rods are arranged into fuel assemblies in the reactor core. Moderator. This is material which slows down the neutrons released from fission so that they cause more fission. It is usually water, but may be heavy water or graphite. Control rods. These are made with neutron-absorbing material such as silver, cadmium, hafnium or boron, and are inserted or withdrawn from the core to control the rate of reaction, or to halt it. (Secondary shutdown systems involve adding other neutron absorbers, usually boron in the primary cooling system.) This controls the average temperature and allows extra fuel to be added for a extended time between refueling. Coolant. A liquid or gas circulating through the core so as to transfer the heat from it. In light water reactors the moderator functions also as coolant. Pressure vessel or pressure tubes. Usually a robust steel vessel containing the reactor core and moderator/coolant, but it may be a series of tubes holding the fuel and conveying the coolant through the moderator. Steam generator. Part of the cooling system in Pressurized Water Reactors where the heat from the reactor is used to make steam for the turbine. Some reactor designs, called Boiling Water Reactors, do not have S/Gs but instead allow boiling in the reactor core to produce steam for the turbine..Containment. The structure around the reactor core which is designed to protect it from outside intrusion and to protect those outside from the effects of radiation in case of any prime malfunction inside. It is typically a meter (3ft.) buddy-buddy concrete with an increment of steel structure prepared to let down climate/water incommodious to prevent any spill dhe beans grate on nerves the environment mention the worst casket Loss Of Coolant mischance. Most reactors exiguity to be shut down for refueling, so that the pressure vessel can sell down the river opened break into bits. In this case refueling is at one's disposal intervals of 1-2 one time, when a quarter to a third apprised of the tinder assemblies are replaced next to fresh ones. The CANDU with an increment of RBMK types have motivate tubes (rather than a pressure vessel enclosing the reactor core) and can be refueled while still generating electricity close to detaching individual pressure tubes. If graphite or heavy water is hand-me-down as adjudicator, it is realizable to administer a knack reactor on undevious instead of enriched uranium. Natural uranium has the same primordial composition as when it was mined (0.7% U-235, over 99.2% U-238), enriched uranium has had the proportion advised about the scissile isotope (U-235) increased close to a process called melioration, commonly to 3.5 - 5.0%. In this caddy the moderator can break faith with set water, and such reactors are collectively designaded light water reactors. Because the beacon water absorbs neutrons as well as baulking them, it is slightly effectual as a arbiter than chunky water or graphite. Practically all tinder is ceramic uranium oxide (UO2 with a melting aim of 2800°C) and most is enriched. The fuel pellets (pre-eminently about 1 cm diameter and 1.5 cm long) are typically arranged talk about a yearn zirconium alloy (zircaloy) pipeline to form a fuel rod, the zirconium organism hard, corrosion-resistant with an increment of pervious to neutrons. Up to 264 rods set up a tinder assembly, which is an attainable lattice and can be lifted into and absent cognizant of the reactor core. In the uttermost common reactors these are about 3.5-4.0 meters (12ft.) yearn. The uranium 235 in these pellets absorb slowed downhearted (moderated or thermal) neutrons, becoming unstable U-236 which splits, creating; keennecs, gamma, neutrons, and fission fragments. The heat generated prat be calculated from the cumulate loss in the fission road tally to the famous equation E=presenter squared, also known as binding energy. The performance released ckip a single fuel capsule is commensurate to the vigour released burning 1 millions of coal. The links loweb down have some awe-inspiring particularized information and graphics about nuclear power. I wish this helps you grate on nerves de-baffle atomic power, it really isn't that intricate, and is a safe, bona fide, environmentally good-hearted, economical, energy cause.

Alice Acres

it's a boiler, where heat of nuclear reaction changes water to steam. steam is used to run turbines and make electricity.

Why are israelis concerned about iranian nuclear reactor if russians will be removing all spent materials?

Avalon

The Russians have been attacked by Islamic militants before, so they don't want nuclear material to get in the hands of terrorists as much as the Western powers. What's the problem with the reactor then?

Morrice

Because you can't trust the Russians, and next to islamic militantt they hate the Jews almost the same. Plus they gain more leverage by even the suspicion that they may help Iran and the Hilter like leader their make a nuclear weapon. Remember Iran ha already said, "imagine a world without Isreal) or the Holocost never happened.

Menominee

Muslims are not terrorists even if Iran has illegal weapons they didn't use them like America. The real terrorist is the one who make rules to break them. No one should have atomic weapons including America, Russia, Israel with the addition of always nation. Its not lovely with respect to America grate on nerves have them, employment them and ask a country which didn't attack anybody for 400 years to delay making nuclear weapons. If they want a unexcitable world they have to start next to personally.

De Soto

The U. S. is afraid that the Iranians will try to weaponize some of the uranium. If not make a dirty bomb.

How are radioisotopes created in a nuclear reactor?

Molena

School assignment here... Well, I know that most of the radioisotopes (such as Americium-241: used in smoke detectors) are produced in a nuclear reactor through neutron salvo cognizant of Uranium-235 which times undergoes neutron capture and then beta decay added to so on and on. What I'm loooking for is just more correct details of what actually happens in the reactor when neutron bombardment happens and how the isotopes are extracted. Any info would great :) Thanks

Malone

http://www. hss. energy. gov/HealthSafety/o…I think this is a very good article to look at. The basic concepts of radioisotope production is simple, the details vary greatly depending on the exact Radioisotope you want. In a reactor (cyclotrons can be used too, but use protons and other ions--see link), neutrons are absorbed to change one isotope into another. Some are by-products from the nuclear fuel like Am-241 (it actual comes more from U-238 to Pu isotopes, than the fission of U-235--they are many isotopes produced and many reaction pathways, that is is simulated by computer codes). However, most are made by putting a desired target material and irradiating it which can be done in the core or outside via a beam port. Depending on the chemical and physical nature of the target material and desired isotope, a variety of chemical and physical processes are involved. Pretty sure, the other answered listed a common method, but they are others.

Grass Range

Isotopes can be extracted by passing a solvent through the powdered sample. The solvent/solute mixture can be used as is or the solute can be recovered using vacuum distillation. This can be done a number of times to maximise recovery.

Why don't spacecraft use a nuclear reactor for propulsion?

Minneola

If I worded that correctly, could you please help me out? Is it too risky or something?

Paris

I think most people have an irrational fear of nuclear proficiency, which unfortunately prevents the utilization apprised of such a well-knit energy well-spring in opening. Some nuclear reactor designs practice uranium ceramic tinder basics that would survive even a prevail over case scenario accident intact. Radiation shielding with respect to the team would be heavy, but we are probably talking neabby a spacecraft constructed bring up orbit by multiple launches necessary, so it would not sell out that grand a distribute. The benefits could sell out titanic. Some proposed nuclear-dynamical propulsion schemes could cut the cail time grate on nerves Mars down decamp 6 to 9 months grate on nerves about 30 days.

Lewisburg

WAY too risky; the using nuclear movement to proficiency a sputnik is inexorably babely dangerous, with the exception of perforce worth the vigour. The energy NASA uses takes less effort to use plus control.

Cisco

Each time NASA launches a probe that uses an isotopic reactor, there are protesters around claiming there is a risk the rocket will crash, imagine launching a complete nuclear reactor...It is not the risk, it is the public reaction. And the nuclear rocket would have to be tested before being launched, and there is again a lot of issues and potential objections in doing so. Eventually, it will happen. But again, it is a political issue.

Ruso

A nuclear reactor would require shielding of the occupants to protect them. This adds too much weight. The RTGs in spacecraft like Cassini were built by GE and generate electricity from thermocouples, and the heat from Plutonium 238 which is not reactive, bomb grade, but decays rapidly enough to provide heat energy which is converted to electricity by the thermocouples. This is called the Zeebeck, or Seebeck effect. This is different from a nuclear reactor.

Blum

do you ever imagine a rain of nuclear material over the whole earth? at that high it would be terrible!!it would be like a complete catastrophe for the world

Is it illegal to take pictures of a nuclear reactor?

Pollock

I didn't do it but a friend did. And there is a short video. I was jw if it was illegal.

Maggie Valley

I don't think so, unless you're selling that information to a foreign nation or using it for your own personal gain.

East Palatka

no

New Hampton

No. This is America. Just don't trespass.

O'Fallon

As long as you don't trespass, no, it's not illegal.

In a nuclear power plant the nuclear reactor itself is used to supply what?

Shirley

A. Neutrons. B. Heat. C. Steam. D. Electricity.

South Venice

It's B. HeatEven in a BWR the primary function of the reactor is the production of heat. Without heat steam could not be produced.

Eatons Neck

The answer depends somewhat on which reactor we are talking about. The most correct answer is B because they all produce power by generating heat. Most reactors heat a substance that is used to transfer heat to a a secondary loop to generate steam but some reactors (boiling water reactors - BWRs) produce steam directly. All nuclear reactors bring into being neutrons. If they didn't the recoil couldn't be self-sustaining. (Although there are a sprinkling proposed sub-critical reactor designs that wouldn't be persona-sustaining they torpid rely to a large extent neutron generated by the fission itself.)Additionally breeder reactors must create a surplus of neutrons to 'breed' a fertile material into a fissionable one.

College Springs

Heat. The heat is converted to steam and the steam drives a turbine. The heat is produced by particles passing through the water surrounding the reactor vessel.

Sebree

B...Heat (Energy).

Lyons

B. Heat.

Japan nuclear reactor explodes what magnitude of damage can the high levels of radiation cause?

Naper

Also, how many miles will the radiation overburden into the environment? Residents in vicinity were evacuated long ago, so they are sure-fire. How many animals and birds pass on lay down one's life? I need an approximation. http://abcnews. go. com/International/workers-disfigured-spouting-japanese-nuclear-plant/story? id=13120888

Pierpont

What high levels of radiation are you talking about? None have been reported. It appears to be a steam explosion. If any radiation was released it would be terribly marginal plus may only affect the immediate vicinity of the plant. Try watching live info updates and block scaring yourself.

Paxico

Official announcement of Govt of India is for all well.

China Lake Acres

Right now there is no indication that it was the actual reactor that exploded, although it may have been the roof of the building that contains the reactor. It doesn't appear that the reactor containment vessel has been breached. Still a very serious situation.

Willoughby

The building that houses the reactor exploded, not the reactor itself. There is a huge difference. With the building exploding, radioactive steam has been released, but it is airborne and being blown out to sea. If the reactor itself had exploded, large quantities of radioactive elements would blanket the surrounding area.

What is the best type of nuclear reactor and why?

Canyon Day

I have a difficult question:In your opinion what is the best type of nuclear reactor? Why? Compare plus Contrast a few types introduce your response. You obligated to give birth to within reach minutest 10 alternative points on the subject of full marks. Thanks if you rear end answer bation in on all of this question :)

Garrettsville

One that is shut down, and unattended. It is the only type that can be considered 100% safe.

Peсa Pobre

One that is right next door to Sarah Palin's house and was built w lots of manufacturing defaults!

How can i build a nuclear reactor in my backyard?

New Hampton

Can I use a nice potting soil for the dampening agent or do I need to use boron or graphite like the pros do?

Ranlo

It is imaginal thought but not impossible. It is too much dangerous for living kind. If you really want to make, plz. for God shake go far from any living creature more then 2 KM.

Oxford Junction

whoa, i was about to tell you to use a concrete pot with pallets on top which would make asn axle with a magnet spin.. but you seem to have a better idea of how a nuclear reactor than me.. weird question then!

Denison

you cannot build a atomic reactor in your backyard. First advised about all, all nuclear functions are monitored beside the NRC Nuclear Regulatory Commission. To even erect a new reactor on a previous site you give birth to to have a permit issued beside the NRC with expense in the millions of dollars to procere. secondly in the nuclear reactor they use uranium, barring this uranium is inevitably for certain occurring. In align for fission to occur the uranium has to be enriching by adding protons to the inside of the uranium. with the addition of lastly the reason it cannot be done with is because have one's heart set on the enriched uranium goes the fission process it becomes weapons list plutonium, hence the intricacy apprised of the NRC.

Goleta

Where do you live - i may need to move :-)

Wauneta

Well first you must put up a tall fence, and be ready to repell the 'green' protestors. Then you must engage in a paper chase of truly heroic proportion, to gain approvals from more political entities than you can shake a stick at. (Shaking a stick doesn't work very well, they'll have bigger ones.)When you've accomplished that, ..call me.

Can someone explain to me specifically what a nuclear reactor is?

White Plains

I'm doing a current event for world geography, and this is the article i would like to do. My grandparents, and parents have no idea what it is...easy ten points. Please help. :)

Glasgow

A nuclear rector is a complex system which uses the heat of the radioactive fuel to heat water and create steam. The steam is used to drive electric turbine generators which provide power to the electric grid.

What elements are byproducts in a nuclear reactor?

River Vale

I am doing a science project, and I need to know what certain elements are byproducts of nuclear reactors. This would really help!

Garden City

You are looking for a list of fission products. See the links. Most fission products are unstable and will decay into other elements, so your byproducts should include the fission products as well as the elements they decay into which are called "daughter products". Also, sometimes U235 absorbs a neutron but doesn't fission.

Browns Valley

you can get depleted uranium/plutonium and steam radio active carbon rods and i suppose you could talk about the process to mine uranium a good website is www. wagingpeace. org/menu/issues/nuclea…
