What is the purpose of a moderator in a nuclear reactor?

The moderator in a nuclear reaction is used to slow the neutrons. Neutrons are used as bullets to split the fissionable material. Slow bullets work better. Heavy water or graphite is used.

To slow the reaction. Heavy water is used.



Pine Point

It slows down the speed of the neutrons given off by the fission reaction. Some reactors use heavy water D20, some use graphite.
