I heard people scream and shout.” says Dina from Indonesia.On December twenty-sixth, 2004 at exactly 7:59 a.m.a catastrophic earthquake hit all the countries and islands in the South-Eastern hemisphere and caused a series of tsunamis leaving the death and damage tolls soaring.The earthquake that generated the great Indian Ocean and Indonesian Tsunami is estimated to have released the energy of twenty-three thousand Hiroshima type atomic bombs.Deadly waves roared speedily across the Indian Ocean at the speed of a jet plane going five hundred miles per hour.The Indian Ocean Tsunami traveled approximately three thousand miles to Africa, destroying property and generating causalities along the way.The consequences of the huge earthquake and tsunamis had a huge impact on not just Southern Asia and Western Africa, but the whole world.News channels, newspapers, the internet and the media were being flooded with video clips showing the mass destruction, damage statistics, and death tolls.Humanitarian organizations and governments quickly took action to assist those affected by the disaster.They were concerned the death toll could rise higher from diseases and hunger.At the end of the day of December twenty-sixth, more than two hundred thousand people had been killed and two billion people had been left homeless and injured.One-third of the people who died were children because they were not strong enough to fight the force.Fourteen billion dollars were donated from Global aid.About eleven billion dollars were needed in rebuilding the infrastructure broken apart.In addition to its massive death toll, South Asia’s tsunami rearranged geographic features of the Indian Ocean above and below the water’s surface.There was about a 9.15 magnitude quake on the Richter scale and a 7.1 aftershock.Vanished islands, restructured coastlines, and uncertain shipping lanes were also part of the massive destruction.Today, the world still mourns over the ten painful minutes the disaster took place in.Families and relatives affected by the catastrophe still reminisce the loss of their loved ones.Fifty-thousand bodies yet remain unfound.A journalist and photographer from India, Arko, said, “I realized, unfortunately, for us it is our love that covers up tragedies, disaster, the sorrow of people, and the emotions we feel.But, they always do remain as memories, and the images of people I saw come back in my dreams, as if I saw those people yesterday.In effect, we are not the same people.” Currently, six years after the event there are still ongoing projects to give aid to the victims of the loss.In this day and age we can't prevent tsunamis from occurring, and there is not much we can do to impede the approaching flood of water.Education and warning are the two contributing factors that can help minimize the damage of a tsunami.If the residents of South Asia and Africa learn and understand fundamental safety procedures of earthquakes and tsunamis, in the future the damage of an natural disaster can be much less.The fact that there was an earthquake preceding the tsunami would have caused the people to seek higher ground until the danger of a tsunami was over, but many people were washed away because they simply did not understand the physical factors that link earthquakes to tsunamis.In the future, hopefully America will find an adequate system to stop tsunamis.Some steps we can take toward lessening the damage of a natural disaster are: Don't build vital buildings near the coast such as, emergency services, hospitals, water plants and power stations.These facilities should be inland so they will keep running in the event of a natural disaster.Buildings near to the coast can be built on concrete stilts.The stilts need to be a few meters up and the stilts must be thick and strong so they can slow down the water causing it to do less damage and not go much further.Water can rush through underneath without damaging the building.Natural disasters, like the Indian Ocean Tsunami will not have such severe damages like destroying property and people.If a catastrophe similar to the South Asia Tsunami occurs again, hopefully the world will be prepared.

Im writing a paper due by 12 am tonight its already 10 -.- procrastination kills lmao anyway Im pretty much done just need anybodies imput, on anything I missed, what you would take out, add, change etc.I really need a good grade on this so yeah this is what i have “Three Mile Island” was built on a sand bar in the middle of Pennsylvania’s Susquehanna River.The plant had a state of the art Unit 2 reactor which had beengenerating electricity for over a year, which was designed by Babcock and Wilcox.Everything had been running smoothly until March 28, 1979.On this day there was a cooling problem that caused a partial melt down of the reactors core.So due to the loss of coolant, there was a significant amount of radioactivity released into the surrounding environment.An estimated 43,000 curies of radioactive krypton gas was reportedly released into the environment.The valve that failed at Three Mile Island had previously malfunctioned 11 times before at other plants, but neither the designer of the reactor nor the NRC (Nuclear Regulatory Commission) issued a warning.It is believed if that warning had gone out to all similar nuclear power plants using the same reactor cores, that the accident at Three Mile Island would have never happened.More than 2,000 lawsuits, claiming that leaked radiation caused cancer, and birth defects such as clubfeet and Down Syndrome, were dismissed in 1996 but now are on appeal.During March 29 and 30, operators used a system of pipes and compressors to move the gas to waste gas decay tanks.After September 11th people are taking extra precautions of their nuclear plants in case of a terrorist attack.By late afternoon, operators began high-pressure injection of water into the reactor cooling system to increase pressure and to collapse steam bubbles.If a terrorist would hit the plant with an explosive it would shoot the radioactive material into the air.Because the severe vibrations could have damaged the pumps and made them unusable, operators shut down the pumps.From March 30 through April 1 operators removed this hydrogen gas "bubble" by periodically opening the vent valve on the reactor cooling system pressurizer.This action stopped the loss of coolant valve through the relief valve.Because the pressuriser level was increasing, they thought the reactor was too full of water.By 7:50 pm on 28 March, they restored forced cooling of the reactor when they were able to restart one reactant coolant pump.Three Mile Island Alert and other anti-nuclear groups still work to remind people of the plant's dangers.They are also built to withstand impacts, but not that of a wide-bodied passenger jet full of fuel.As a result of Three Mile Island, the NRC revamped its licensing procedures, making it more difficult for new plants to open.Three Mile Island Alert fears that damaged fuel which is in the form of tiny particles still sits at the bottom of the Unit 2 reactor and could heat up and start another nuclear reaction.Although studies done after the incident showed that increased radiation in the air did not pose threats to humans, a 1997 study revealed an increase in cancer in areas surrounding Three Mile Island.The factory has been shut down since the incident and the partial meltdown in 1979.ANy HELP ?:(
