Since 2011, as part of our Through a Lens project, we have been publishing the Foreign and Commonwealth Office photographic collection (CO 1069) online. The images have been published onto Flickr Commons, enabling everyone to contribute to an understanding of past events, by allowing them to comment, tag and re-use the pictures.
For many of the images there was little or no accompanying information. By adding the images to Flickr people have been able to build on this - improving location details and transcriptions and adding context and memories, to help build a rich online collection.
We have also worked closely with community groups to encourage the use of the Caribbean images in events and exhibitions.
There are now nearly 20,000 images online, which you can browse by country. Our records specialists have also produced blogs and podcasts to share their knowledge about some of these images. Explore the collection online.
