What is the function of control rods in a nuclear reactor?

Neptune Beach

Control rods absorb neutrons that are part of the nuclear fission process. The flow of neutrons in the reactor determine how much power the reactor puts out. Controlling the reaction is keeps the reactor from getting too hot and melting down. The control rods are inserted to reduce the rate of fission, and they are withdrawn to increase the rate of fission. Changing the number of inserted control rods finely tunes the reaction.
